3D parts printing-

Thu Feb 06, 2014 2:21 pm

Sunday before the Super Bowl :supz: :supz: my son who works in powerplant and pylon buildup at Everett showed me a 3D model of a 747 #2 pylon about 8 inches long, it was a bit 'fuzzy' (looked like it had been sprinkled with bread flour) but had all the access openings and pylon accessories cast in and looked like a bit of very light sanding would correct the surface.
Resin parts guys better be on their toes

There are 3d printers out there now which have a much smoother surface finish than what you have described. The technology is there, now they just have to get the cost down to compete with the resin guys. I've been using 3d printed parts for several years now in the cockpit kits I make for r/c models.

Here are some of the 3d printed components for my Spitfire cockpit kit.

And the finished cockpit.

Very cool. I've got a buddy that does some custom stuff for me when I need it. Little pricey but worth it at times. ALOT of great 1/144th stuff on Shapeways.com

'a little pricy..' and laser printer ink is still a bargain at only $9000.00 a gallon

We have had some parts for the Corsair done this way, for static AC. Its a great option on non load / stressed parts...
