Superdetailed 1/32 F4U-4 Corsair VF-193 Korea 1952

Sat Nov 05, 2011 2:30 pm

Hello - again! I registered on here about a year ago and posted some pics of my 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-4 build - unfortunately I was no longer able to log in after a few weeks, so I have re-registered...

aircraft from VF-193 'Ghostriders' depicted overgoing maintenance at a forward airbase in South Korea, 1952 - I spent about 500 hours over the course of a year detailing and building it. Sincere thanks to everyone at the Conneticut Corsair restoration project, Warbird pilot Mint Moore & anyone else who helped me out with research. Hope it passes muster with the pilots on here as well as the modellers :D
I will be entering this one in competition at the IPMS UK 'Scale Model World' comp in Telford UK next week.

thanks for looking in, feeback welcomed

When you first started teasing us with subasembly detail posts, I had a feeling this one would be 'over the center field fence' and it sure is!! :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz:
The only things I don't see are few oily handprints on the engine area and a bit of oil residue on the cowlings- :drink3: :drink3: :drink3:

I do believe Drew King aka Cherrybomber13 deserves recognition for some of the detail shots you used for your build. That being said, where's the gas tank for the corsair?

Hello - thanks guys!

PS I have already personally thanked Drew for his help with this, please see similar response in my other thread about hte SBD-5 :)

good question - I had inteneded to make one but ran out of time, and I also thought it would make the scene look a bit too 'busy' & detract from the plane - I also abandoned the idea of putting the second fuel tank on the ground next to it for the same reason...thanks for looking

Rich

First rule of dioramas. 'less IS more' make the viewer use their imagination- and it would look cluttered and detract from the first impression of the viewer.

Rich,
I got your email yesterday. You are quite welcome. Man what an awesome job! :drink3: :drink3: :drink3:
The gas tank bay and the gun bays look amazing. Love the accesses doors being open as well.

Excellent work. I have just one question, why does the paint on the model look so rough.

OMG.., I was just about to ask the same question when I went back to review it. It looks like it was applied very, very thick.., vs how mine look once airbrushed.

Please do take this as a put down at all to the incredible, incredible job on this model.

Best,

S.

I have found when photographing my own models that often the camera will pick up and magnify imperfections in the surface that are not apparent when viewing the model in person. I would bet that the Corsair model looks much smoother to the naked eye.

hey guys

thanks for the responses - sorry it's taken a while to answer the questions

yeah - the paint is a major letdown for me to be honest - it was my first real go with an airbrush & I need to refine my technique for sure...but in real life it looks better I promise haha
also the camera I've got is some mega powerful mega pixel affair that shows everything!

one more thing - there's a load more pics & a full build article that's just been posted up on another forum I frequent, and Fine Scale Modeller mag want to run an article so I hope that will be coming out soon

once more thanks for checking my model, and for all the help & positive comments I've received.

My next model is going to be a crashed B-17 in the same scale as the Corsair, 1/32. As only a vac form shell of the model is available in this scale as opposed to a commercially released kit, it will mean building everything from scratch....but I love a challenge :D

thanks, and here's that article:
