1:48 scale DC-3/C-47 question

Mon Aug 24, 2009 12:57 am

Just got myself the Monogram 1:48 scale Douglas C-47. Does anyone know of any conversion kits for the nose to change it from the original blunt, 2 piece nose to the radar nose?

Basla wood and sandpaper, Remove everything that does not look like a DC-3 nose...........................

Other option is to make a nose out of modeling clay and then vac u form a nose over the clay.

It is called modeling, also known as Adapt, Overcome, Improvise,

Woaw, harsh reply.

Anyways, what i was looking for was if anyone actually had any knowledge of any mods for this kit as there are literally hundreds of mods to other kits by several companies out there. I didn't need a suggestion that I should bastardize my kit with with my own lack of talent. Geez, if i had that kind of skill I wouldn't have wasted my money on the kit and just carved the whole thing out of a piece of driftwood...

Aw, lighten up, it was made in jest and probably the only way you will get that nose converted.

And as far as modifications go, it is straightforward and relatively easy. If you have the skills to build the kit, you have the skills to reshape the nose.

Make a template from cardstock to check the profile while sanding and an X-acto knife can etch the hinges or fastener covers.

When you cut the blunt nose off, put in a short length of tubing. Glue another piece of tubing one size smaller than the first piece to the balsa block. Now you can fit the nose block to the fuselage without gluing it and it will be easy to replace if you sand too much off and have to start over.

And just think about it, when you are finished, it will be your modification and your skills will have grown by that much.

The downside is, your confidence will increase to the point where you might start looking at driftwood as something other than...driftwood.
