1/48th Mustang Mk.IV

Mon May 25, 2009 12:06 pm

Just finished, Hasegawa 1/48 P-51k in the colors of R.A.A.F. Number 84 Squadron.
Overall I'm pretty happy with the results, but much prefer the Tamiya kit with it's split canopy, seperate flaps, and easier fit. Still, I love the markings on this one, which is why I picked it up. Hope you like it!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for not painting the gun panels on the wings a different color. I have to point out that the wings were putty filled and painted at once before being attached to the fuselage. Then the under wing panel was attached after the fuel tanks were installed and then the flaps and ailerons installed.

I continue to have to show multiple photos proving my point and can not find conclusive proof the other way. There were a few planes painted OD green and then stripped down and that might be a sample but from the factory and for most part, it is the same color as the rest of the wing as you depicted on your plane.

Thanks YOU!!! Kel

Nice model. Attractive markings, and very tastefully weathered. What kind of paint did you use for the metallic finish?

Thanks for the kind words. I also paint the rudder a greyish aluminum because those are fabric covered. The only panels I painted a different color were at the exhaust, and near the nose, which I've seen in some reference photos as being a different type of metal. Being an RAAF bird, the wheel wells are also bare metal, as opposed to the zinc chromate on the US versions.
Now I've heard that the wings were always painted rather than bare metal, is that the case in the field?

I sprayed it with Tamiya Gloss Aluminum, and then washed it with Games Workshop Boltgun Metal thinned to water consistancy. I shot a cote of gloss before and after decals.
If not for those aussie markings, I probably would have passed this kit up, I've built a dozen mustangs before, but I really liked the markings of this one, so it called to me.
