Spring is here..time for Mosquitoes

Fri May 01, 2009 8:11 pm

Trying to get this one finished for next Tuesday night's club meeting. The theme is anything having to do with "09." I'm building a 1/72 Tamiya Mosquito B.IV of 109 Squadron. The kit actually comes with the markings I want, so I'm using the kit decals.

The cockpit is OOB, with some Airwaves PE seatbelts I had laying around.

The bombay doors are a separate insert (because their different on the fighter version, but the kits share the same fuselage) but there's no bombay. I wanted to open up the doors, so a bit of scratchbuilding was necessary. It looks fine with the bombs in place.

Got the basic painting (Gunze acrylics) done a couple days ago..love that black belly scheme! I didn't have any RAF Ocean Gray handy, so I used USAF Gunship Gray. I expect the Color Police will soon be busting down my door and hauling me off. The nice thing about the Tamiya kit is that the fit is so good, the wings, fuselage, and tailplanes can be completely finished separately, and joined at the end.

I've now got all the stickers on. The Tamiya decals are a bit thick, but settled down OK with some Solvaset. I'm letting everything cure out good, and plan to dullcoat it and do final assembly this weekend.

Cheers!

Love those tamiya kits. I'm building a hasegawa mustang right now, I only wish the fit was as good.

Nice job, I'm looking forward to the finished results.

I agree on both counts--keep up the good work, and Tamiya kits are great. I have two Tamiya P-47s in short term storage now, but they are the same way, just paint 'em and glue 'em together with almost no filler.

I'm glad to see someone is finishing a model!

Thanks guys! I've got a Tamiya P-47 on the back burner that I need to get back to.

Got her more or less finished in time for the deadline, but I have to touch up a couple things that I rushed. The decals have a couple silvered spots that need touch ups, I need to completely re-do the wingtip lights, and I made a bit of a mess on the leading edge of one stab trying to attach the antenna wire. I plan to have the touch-ups finished in time for a model show next Saturday.

Here she is, warts and all. This is the last black airplane I'm building for awhile..it's as bad as natural metal for showing mistakes! Hopefully my boo-boos and touch-ups won't be as glaringly obvious to the judges as they are to me.

This is actually the first Tamiya kit I've completed. The kit itself is as close to perfection as I could wish for. The only problems were the ones I created myself!

Cheers!

That looks great, very well done. You've inspired me, so I'm going to try to actually finish a kit too.

Nice! :) Of all the kits I've built, I don't recall ever doing a mosquito, then again, it has been a couple or three decades!!
