Desert War Campaign(Group Build)

Mon Nov 19, 2007 4:05 pm

Alright, this seems to be the first group build here, so these are the ground rules:

1. The aircraft you build must be built while this campaign takes place, basically from now until sometime early next year so we can get the maximum number of participants involved. The end-date should be around the first week of February, so we can be sure EVERYONE that may want to get in has time.

2. Before you begin building, declare what you will build so I can add you to the master list in this post. If the aircraft is offbeat and its use in this theater is questionable, provide documentation proving its accuracy in being put in this campaign.

3. Put your build pictures in this thread, although separate threads are fine for questions and the like, so this one doesn't get too cluttered with one person's specific questions, as that can be hard to follow.

So, ready, set, GO!

Master List:
Second Air Force: A-20 havoc/ P-38
Rogue: Long tail P-40F/ Me-110
Mazda P5: P-40
Shay: P-40 Tomahawk/ Bf-109E

B.R.

Put me down for either an early A-20/Havoc or possibly a P-38. I have to throw in a caveat here--my contribution will depend on available time, depending on how much we're working on a certain 1/1 scale bird! (My wife is going to tell me I'm crazy to even THINK I have time to build a model! )

I'll be doing a p-40, but that's all for now.

Alright to start off I'll be modeling:

1/72 Academy P-40 Tomahawk in No. 112 Squadron colors

And also:

1/72 Heller Bf 109-E in the colors of Jagdgeschwader 27

And if I get these knock out here hopefully before the end of Dec I'll add some more subjects.

Well, since our weekend plans changed around, I decided to dig out my first (probably only) project for the Group Build. It's a 1/48 Hasegawa P-38F. I paid $5.00 for this complete kit back in the '90s because someone returned it to our hobby shop with a warped wing. In all honesty, I started to assemble the booms way back then and taped the wing together to straighten them and then put the whole thing back in the box. Ellen told me I'd never get it done by February, and she's probably right. And yes, this is as clean as my workbench ever gets.

From the looks of all the Razorbacks, she is.

I'd feel right a home there!

I have not had time to go out and pick up a kit for this build yet, though I was given a Hawker Hurricane that is partially completed(painted silver?) and missing the cockpit, so that could be nice to finish and bury in a sand dune :).

I am looking forward to going out and picking up a Gloster Gladiator to do up in the colors of Rhoald Dahl's plane, or possibly a P-38... there are a lot of options.

I would love to do a gladiator if I could find one. None of te shops around seem to have one.

Rogue,

Those P-47s have looked like that for around two years, give or take a couple of months. There's a B-29B, B-24H, and a 1/48th scale Mooney in a similar state somewhere under other piles of refuse on the bench. I love to start projects but never seem to get them finished!

Not only does my model desk look like that, so does my hanger!

I wish I had that luxury, Rogue! Our money pit is in a large hangar with four other aircraft, so I have to keep my little corner clean. :? I make up for it by keeping the garage in a state of confusion. 8)

Surprisingly, this thread has slipped down the page a good bit, so I decided to post a progress update on my P-38. Here is how it looked in November:

And here is what I have gotten accomplished since then:

Can anyone beat that?

ha! that's great.
I've not really done much on my P-40. Winter has pretty much kept me from painting :?

Gosh, it's been half a year since we updated one another on the Desert Project. I just happened to take a photo of my desk the other night for another thread. Here is what I've accomplished on the P-38 since the first of the year:

That right-hand boom will turn up someday,
