2008 MUSEUM SCHEDULE

This is an open invitation to US and Allied WWII re-enactment groups, museums with related collections and individuals who would like to display their collections to come to Historic WACO Field to participate in the activities listed below. We can provide limited indoor table space, dry camping space and plenty of outdoor area for your display. If you display outdoors you will need to provide your own tentage and tables.

Please bear in mind that we are interested only in promoting the story of the glider and its manufacture and use in World War II. This is not a sales venue or political advocacy forum.

Schedule:

Thursday, June 5, 6-9 pm

To commemorate the launching of the Allied invasion of Europe on this date in 1944, the WACO Historical society will host a viewing of the new DVD, Silent Wings. Weather permitting, the hour long presentation will be projected onto the outside of the barn at Historic WACO Field, otherwise it will be held in the hangar. Please bring lawn chairs.

Although the main assault took place on 6 June, airborne troops, many in gliders designed and built in Troy, took off from airfields in England the night of June 5th-6th.

Friday, June 6

Military vehicles and re-enactors will arrive and begin setting up displays of equipment and field fortifications of the WWII era. The field and Museum will be open from 6-9pm. Vintage aircraft will start arriving as well. The Field will open as a parking location for the Strawberry Festival.

Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8th

The Vintage Aircraft Association will host its annual Fly In at WACO Field from 9 to 6 both days. Civilian and military vintage aircraft, vintage autos and motorcycles and military displays will be on view. WACO Field is also a parking location for the Strawberry Festival. Most people using the shuttles “look around” while at the Field.

June 14-15

The Museum will be open 1-5 pm and will feature special displays on the WWII Campaigns in which gliders were used. A special presentation will be given 2:30 pm Sunday on the construction of the mainstay of the US glider fleet, the CG4A, which was designed by the WACO Aircraft Co. 1074 of them were built here as well. If you would like to take part in the presentation or display material
you are welcome.

June 21-22
Our focus this week-end will be on the WACO factory during the War so memorabilia, oral histories and photos will be featured.
There will be a special program at 2:30 Sunday on the workers at WACO who built the gliders. Families and descendants will be our special guests for the afternoon.

June 28-29

The Troy Historical Society and others will join the WACO Historical Society in presenting displays and exhibits dealing with life on the home front. 2:30 Sunday there will be a talk on other Miami County companies that aided in the drive to victory. Again, personal items, photos and letters you might want to share are welcome.

July 4, 5, 6

July 4 Historic WACO Field will host an old fashioned 4th of July picnic. Groups and individuals participating in parades and celebrations are cordially invited to spend the afternoon picnicing on our grounds and relaxing from the day’s prior activities.

Military displays will be on view for the entire weekend. Saturday and Sunday will see WACO Field return to its normal schedule, that is, open to the public1-5 and RC Flying as usual.

Please note that on Saturday and Sunday, 1-5pm for each of the weekends listed the Museum will be open to the public. The admission is $5 per adult. Students, Society members and identified participants are free.

If you are interested in attending, please contact me at www.wacoairmuseum.org, tpurke@hotmail.com, 937-216-6925 or at 937-335-9226
