Post subject:  Vintage Wings Canada Last Open House Sept. 1

The last open house of the year will be this Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Gatineau Airport.
The number of visitors attending the Open Houses has been steadily increasing as well as the number of fly-in visitors.
I hope they don't mind me posting the tentative itinerary.
10:00am:
Just before the rope drops at 10:00am, Francois Begin will welcome all of our visitors in French and English.

Special Visitors: We will have a number of special visitors attending the September Open House.

Swordfish:

Mrs. Jim Watson:
The wife of a former Swordfish pilot, Mr. James Watson, will be visiting us this Saturday during the Open House event. Mr. Watson passed away only three months ago and although Mrs. Watson is still somewhat fragile she is eager to visit the VWoC hangar. Arrangements are being made to interview Mrs. Watson regarding the details of her husband’s flying career. Once an article has been written it will be on the website.

R.A. “Bert” Joffs:
At the August Open House, we met another Swordfish pilot, R.A. “Bert” Joffs. Mr. Joffs was quite talkative and happy to discuss his experiences with the Swordfish. He has been invited to the September Open House. We have invited Mr.Joffs to say a few words about his experiences.

Commander (Retired) Peter Savage:

We will be hosting Mr. Savage at the Open House and will be conducting a discussion/interview type forum featuring Mr. Joss and Mr. Savage’s flying careers.

Mr. Louis Geoffrion is a WW2 fighter pilot who flew Hurricanes with the desert air force early in the war and served with Stocky Edwards while there. Mr. Geoffrion parachuted into the Mediterranean during his tour. He then was moved to NW Europe and served with 421 Squadron flying Spitfires. His Wing Leader at one point was Johny Johnson. Post war he flew Vampires with the Montreal Reserve squadron and worked in the financial world. He has been an Honourary Colonel with one of Air Force squadrons in Quebec.

Mr. Bob Haverstock:
Bob Haverstock will be with us. He joined the postwar air force, flew Sabres in England in the early fifties and I ferried Sabres and T-33s to Europe with him for a couple of years in the mid fifties. He then flew DC-3s, C-46s, 737s, and Electras with Nordair/CP Air in the north on the Dew line and on Ice Patrols in the Greenland Straits and around the world. He still has a valid Airline Transport Rating ticket.

He instructed on T-33s in Training Command and taught Brits, Danes, Turks, Portuguese? Belgian and French students and worked in the Flying Instructors School, Central Flying School and the Instrument Check Pilot School.

He then did aircraft accident investigations for three years and a CF-104 Starfighter tour in Germany as a squadron commander.

He commanded Base Comox, was Defence Attache in London and Chief of Staff for Operations for the Air Force. I finished as Director of Plans at NORAD in Colorado Springs, USA.

Pilot Reports:
At different times during the Open House a pilot will present an informal talk on the aircraft they are current on. Like the Pilot Reports, the maintenance team will present informal talks on different maintenance topics throughout the day on Saturday. Times for these report presentations will be posted on a cork board.

Wow just got back from VWoC volunteer appreciation event, arrived just in time to watch two Canadaire CL415 Super Scooper water bombers land one from Quebec and one from Ontario Gov't along with the Spitfire, Hurricane, and Mustang. They were practicing for a flyby in salute to the fallen firefighters on Sept. 9.
