From what I have heard he wouldn't talk about it he was so frustrated, but I can never figure out why exactly he was frustrated. Could you enlarge on it for us?
I think he was partially bitter that it happened, didn't like the stigma of not having an arm, pretty much let it ruin the rest of his life. It was REALLY sad talking to him. I'm glad I did, though.
Honestly, I don't know this for sure, but I think that like a lot of things in life it's about how YOU respond to things. I've been told that the guys on the Hornet took up a fairly good sized collection for him (considering the circumstances) when he was sent off the ship. I don't know how much he really remembered about the event.
I do know that every time I heard Mr. DeShazer talk about it seemed like it was pretty sobering thing for all of the guys around. I'm still not sure I have the exact scene down, but DeShazer said that he was out of the aircraft helping and that he apparently went over to Wall just before they left and Wall told him "Give 'em hell for me." (That's funny MY getting edited!)

I also talked to another plane handler named Moritz, who was also apparently there and didn't see it actually happen, but was very close by.
