Why do you 'need' to do that?

Because (IMO) if you don’t? you’ve become a storytellers version of ‘false advertising’ for bastardizing historical events for the sake of entertainment and financial gain at the expense of the historical events reality and truth. All under the guise that you’re also attempting to bring attention and remembrance to that historical event.

I believe several decades ago Hollywood started posting “Based on Actual Events” within a productions credits as a way to defuse any backlash from critics.

Hmmm....not sure how I feel about this. I see where you're coming from, but there's also a need to tell a compelling story. Creating 'composite' characters or events is a common enough thing and I don't see the harm in it tbh. Sure, if there's some ludicrous divergence from historic events then that leaves a bad taste, but otherwise... well I guess I might that say if all the things that happen in it happened to somebody during the course of events, then where's the harm?

The youtube channel "History Buffs" does a good job of going over historic based movies and picking out the truth from the fiction. He has one about Band of Brothers, Midway and so on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxv3s7xTYHU
