The well known Bf-109 known as "FMBB" (now re-registered as D-FMBD) is ready to fly again after more than a decade of storage and rebuild work, having last flown in 2007. "FMBB" is now owned by Hangar10, but it will still be operated by the Messerschmitt Foundation.

According to information reported by Helmut Schmidt on Facebook, and the "Flug Revue" website, the aircraft is now approved by the German Federal Aviation Authority and should be flying within weeks. The year and a half restoration was mainly performed by a combination of the renowned Bf-109 and DB605 rebuilders/overhaulers Hartmair Leichtbau and Rinner Performance Engines. The aircraft, originally Hispano Buchon C.4K-87 c/n 156, was converted to a DB605 engine in the 1980's. Supposedly during this latest restoration there is not much left showing any indication it was ever a Buchon. Much of the fuselage is now completely new, re-manufactured to Bf-109G spec, and with an authentically-detailed Bf-109G-6 type cockpit and all original type wiring/plumbing/systems. The wings were also restored and I believe rebuilt to authentic Bf-109G type standard as well.

Here is the Flug Revue article: https://www.flugrevue.de/klassiker/ruec ... bOkIWY4ETs

Translation:

Bf-109 FMBB Ready for Handover

An old friend is ready to be handed over to the Messerschmitt Foundation. The well-known Messerschmitt Bf 109G6 "FMBB" was completely rebuilt in less than two years by the Hangar 10 team and its partners.

Thanks to the Hangar 10 team on Usedom and their partners, the population of the flying Messerschmitt Bf 109 is one more specimen. After more than 10 years on the ground, the well-known Messerschmitt is now ready for flight shortly before handover to the Messerschmitt Foundation after only 16 months of complete reconstruction. The fighter, which is the second "FMBB" with the registration D-FMBD, was originally the HA-1112-M1L with the work number-156, was completely overhauled with great attention to detail and prepared for use.

In the meantime, the VVZ (provisional traffic approval) of the Federal Aviation Office is also available and the first flight can be expected in the next few weeks.

The work carried out by the experts, e.g. RPE-Austria (Rinner Performance Engines) and Hartmair Leichtbau, which were carried out around Hangar 10, also included the overhaul of the Daimler-Benz engine, which had already completed 15 hours on the test bench without any problems. When painting, the well-known coloring with the large identification on the fuselage was adhered to. A tribute, since the FMBB was the cornerstone for the flying Messerschmitts of the post-war period

In one of the upcoming issues we will report in detail about the fighter.

Here are some photos shared by Helmut Schmidt on the Facebook pages "Real Messerschmitts Have Merlins" and "Bf-109 Restorations & Projects", showing the aircraft as it looks now:

Thanks for that John.
Awesome.
How many DB powerd 109's could be put up over there? 3? 4?

Super!

Bf-109E-7 W.Nr. 1983 has fallen off of the radar in Germany. Is it also flying or not? I have not come across any photo of it in the air.

This will be the third DB605-powered Bf-109 currently flying in Germany, joining the Bf-109G-6 D-FMGS and Bf-109G-14 D-FMGV, both owned/operated by Hangar10. Here in the US, Jerry Yagen/Military Aviation Museum has the flying DB605-powered Bf-109G N109GY.

With regard to the German-based Bf-109E WkNr.1983, the latest information I've seen was from early 2019, with the DB601 engine/prop removed and undergoing further tuning/testing mounted on a trailer at Manching, in the hangar of the Messerschmitt Foundation.

The Messerschmitt Foundation's DB605-powered Bf-109G-10 D-FDME shouldn't be far from flying again either. As of early 2019 the cockpit and some internal systems were being redone. Also as of early 2019, the Messerschmitt Foundation's Bf-109G-4 "Red 7" D-FWME was in the midst of a major ground-up restoration (again), with a fresh, bare-bone fuselage from Hartmair Leichtbau that could be seen in the Messerschmitt Foundation's hangar.

The Rare Bird Aviation website has had mention of two Bf-109 projects they're currently involved with, one which is said to be completed in 2020 (which I've assumed has been FMBB/D-FMBD, but could very well be wrong). http://rarebird.eu/projects.html

The Spanish Civil War early Bf-109E restoration to fly continues to progress at MeierMotors in Germany, with this one of the most recent photos (from January): https://scontent.ffcm1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/ ... e=5F0C17A2

Bruce Winter's Bf-109G-6 under restoration at Midwest Aero is looking spectacular, and Midwest Aero recently shared this video walk around of the aircraft wheeled out of the hangar: https://www.facebook.com/14935709844101 ... 3322965433
Here is test run video of the Mike Nixon overhauled DB605 that will be going in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbcuvhs ... UzrzXva_IE

In the UK, Graham Peacock has a Bf-109G-2 project undergoing restoration at Air Leasing, and in Canada Kermit Weeks has a Bf-109G-6 undergoing restoration by Don Bradshaw.

In Belgium, the Vormezeele family's Buchon has been receiving attention at FAST Aero, and I had read a few months ago that the Planes of Fame Buchon wasn't far from flying either, having had work completed on its Merlin engine. I haven't heard anything recently about the Buchon G-HISP at Air Leasing, whether it is currently an active project or not. From someone intimately familiar with Air Leasing, the aircraft is/was going to be finished in an original Spanish AF scheme.

Thanks for all those newsy bits John. You're the best, man 8)
That Spanish civil war Emil is really starting to look the business.
I wonder what they will end up doing with all of the original material from this project.
You could almost build a shadow of the aircraft and present them together in historical context.

109's are bada$$!

I think it is fair to say that the notion that this was a genuine bf and not a re- engined Buchon was debunked 25 years ago by someone who knew his way around a 109, Russ Snadden.

Yes, D-FDME is a re-engined Buchon. For instance, the fuel vents and cockpit air vents in the fuselage are Buchon rather than original Messerschmitt, pointing to the fuselage being from a Buchon. The wings are also the double-spar Buchon type. Another of the Bf's I mentioned, the Hangar10 Bf-109G-14, is the former Buchon G-AWHE. The Bf-109G-6 D-FMGS is of course a new-build.

And of course Dittes had a airworthy Buchon prior to the G-10 rebuild.

The cool part....

A few years ago...the only flying machine resembling a 109 was the OFMC Buchon G-BOML in which Mark Hanna sadly passed away while flying it in Spain.

RIP....

But just wow how the scene for German WW2 birds and repros has just exploded!!!!!

Cheers!

It has not yet flown, but there have been more photos and walk-around videos posted of this aircraft within the last few days on Facebook. It sure is stunning! Hopefully you can view these even if you aren't a Facebook member.
