Painful. Just think of the skill and time it takes to rebuild what is left today. I always wondered about the guys who scrapped Bearcats. How could you not see that those things would be pretty cool to cruise around in, and maybe, just maybe it would be better to push a few into the weeds and keep ‘em for later instead of selling them for pennies on the dollar for scrap.

crazy part is some of these piles where just pushed into pits and holes and covered with dirt, not all of them were burned, tropical areas grow over fast and unless you know where they are you're going to have to do some serious digging, and I'd bet alot of good stuff is still down in them holes....Look at the discovery videos of the INDY, look at the level of preservation of the aircraft, that deep in salt water i am truly amazed!...think of all the corsairs pushed off the decks in deep water that with the lack of oxygen and being that deep must be in like condition!....there are still planes to be found, we just need to put our collective knowledge together to come up with good areas to hunt boys! this site has the interest and knowledge and docs to make it happen! look at the p38 of Mathis found in the bogg!....great work fellow wix'r!!!

On a tangent, do I recall either photos or film of Marauders being blown up at Allied airfields in Europe?

I've seen them too. And, I believe, Mustangs.

Not sure where in Europe this photo was taken. States only: "Football Game November 1947"
