DOUGLAS C-54E 27352..(DC-4 Skymaster)"from the box again"
The aircraft was built in Chicago, the factory at the time was where the present OHare International Airport is. Her US Air force number was 44-9126 and accepted by the US ARMY on May 15th 1945. She was transferred to the new USAF on Sept 19th 1947.
During the early fifties she was assigned to a two star (Major General) later only 3 and 4 star Generals rated 4 engine planes, 1 and 2 stars got you a twin engine.
The aircraft was actioned at Davis Monthan AFB on November 6 1975, it was then registed N9013V by Transglobal, then with Flying Fish of Indiana in Jan 19 1980
There is a gap in her history, with stories of drug running up from South America and being impounded by FBI etc etc but in 1995 it was purchased in Montana and flown to Brisbane via Los Angeles,Honolulu, Marjuro, Honiara
It was the 298th C-54 built.
The photo was taken by Wm J Balogh Sr on 12th July 1952.

A great collection Mark.

For information C-54E 49126 now resides in the HARS museum at Wollongong south of Sydney and is airworthy and currently being painted to represent the DC-4's flown here by Trans Australia Airlines [TAA] and Airlines of NSW

I didn't know Doolittle was checked out in a P-51.
I'm a little bit surprised they let him go solo, but as commander If the 8th AF, there wasn't anyone to say "no" and he could make the argument that he needed to be familiar with the types in service.

If I had an L-5 or L-4, I'd make a set of 3 & 4 star placards for the windows.
It would be tempting to do one up in 3rd Army/Patton markings.

I imagine after successfully racing a Gee Bee around the pylons that a Mustang was pretty tame by comparison.

This one is curious, an early model "D" with no dorsal fin, but late enough in the war for 'post-invasion' stripes.

Mark, once again excellent photos you've shared with us! You are a real asset to the forum. I really like the picture of Doolittle in the P-51. He is one of my aviation heroes.

Marvelous set of photos as always Mark!

The panels from General Kepner's P-47 with the nose art were on display at the Grissom Air Museum last time I was there. He was from that area, hence the name "Kokomo".
