You guys have it all wrong. It was an attempt to disguise the PBM as a building from aerial reconnaissance.

I'd guess (1) some type of shelter from the elements or (2) doing classified work on the engines....early jet experiments??

Man, what I wouldn't give to see that poor Boeing all fixed up and mated to some wings...seems like with all of the effort going into recreating some B-17s from scratch right now, it would be a good time to partner with those folks for some wings and a tail...

Not nearly as impressive as the House on the Mariner, Coulson Flying Tankers use these for the Mars.
