facebook is the walmart of the internet, no thanks.
I refuse to have anything to do with it for a variety of reasons, not least of which the CEO is a POS and if I put a dime in his pocket I'd be outraged..

People are having an understandably negative reaction to Facebook, but Scott said "The second option is a more social media like software, essentially a Facebook dedicated solely to the WIX community." I understand that this would NOT be Facebook, but would use software that works in a similar way.

Is this correct?
Are people worried about the culture and intrusiveness of FB, which presumably would not apply to not-Facebook?

Wouldn't that be exactly what we are trying to avoid?

My sparse understanding of how the FB-type social media things work is that they create a popular easy-to-use set of internet tools for the whole world to utilise, install some clever 'profile tracking' software in the background, to better focus their advertisers products/services on their (captive) target audience, and then sit back and enjoy the income derived.

Maybe I have it all wrong and this industry segment of modern communication technology doesn't keep track of user profiles and is quite innocent of any 'Big Brother' tags?

In which case I'm probably already 'de-friended' (or is that 'un-friended') by the people at FB.

Head hung in shame,

B

I have FB and use it a lot. I follow lots of aviation pages. However, I never post on public pages.
Also I find the forum structure more suited for discussion as everything is merged into threads. Makes it more easy to red/find/contribute.
I voted for upgrading the forum software.

The only complaint I have about the current setup is the limitations on the Search function; trying to search a serial number has never worked.

That said, if you're casting around for a template, check out the H.A.M.B. (Hokey Ass Message Board) traditional hot rod/custom forum:
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/for ... e-board.5/
One nice thing is you can either upload photos directly (yay!) or use the usual providers like Fotki or Flickr.

Thanks Chris, your the second person to recommend that software, I'll have to check into it.

As for the search function. Do you mean with the forums or the site as a whole?

The forum search was messed up for awhile but after 81 hours of reindexing earlier this week it should be better now. Let me know if it still doesn't work well.

Yes, this would not be facebook at all, just a facebook like structure devoted only to our subjects and controlled solely by us.

However, beyond the privacy aspects, the general structure of facebook seems to be less than desirable.

I'll look into the upgrade path as well as the software Chris suggested. They might be better options.

And be able to post video!
It would be cool to be able to have youtube/facebook/liveleak video in the post instead of/along with the url link.

An example - I type in Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby's serial and get this:

I search "Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby" and get results including this thread with the serial in a message:

I like the fact that with the current platform old threads get bump to the top if someone has added to that thread, I would want to keep that function. FB does not do that... not sure if the software that is "FB like" would do the same or not

I find Facebook to be a graphical nightmare, so I'd vote against anything that tried to reproduce that confusing look.

I refer to my thread in Vintage all the time. It's a useful log, a reference. I re-visit maintenance actions there, to see how things went and for the visual documentation.

And I know others have referred to my Fairchild info, and repairs, on that thread. It has value for them. And Warner engine operators, same thing.

Also, I refer other people to it, to read my various pilot reports and comments on fighters and other types.

And it adds value to the airplanes there -- our Fairchild and RV6a, because it supports how well they are looked after.

So, no, I do not want anything to change.

Dave

Yes it does!
You also need to select "search for any terms"
If I knew how to attach a screenshot I would show you the result (15 hits for "42-32076")
