Anyone know if the Hornet was there? My dad was a POW in the PI and the ship that was transporting him to Japan and to Manchuria was attacked and sunk by Hornet pilots

Yes the Hornet CV-12 was there in December 1944 then off to the South China Sea through January 1945. Can you elaborate a bit what happened? Would be very interested in hearing about your father. My dad was one the Hornets pilots.

Thanks for posting

Mark

Same here. I never knew they left CONUS.

As always great photos Mark! Thank you for your postings.

I was on board the USS Randolph in 1954-55. She was struck by a kamikaze while anchored at Ulithi on March 11 1945

I served on the USS Randolph in 1963/64. She had been upgraded since WWII, and used as a CVS (anti submarine). She was a good ship, and took quite a beating several times in storms.

Ulithi was only kept secret from the US and home folks, George -- certainty not to the Japanese! My Dad was on the USS Randolph (CV-15) riding anchor at Ulithi on March 11th, 1945 and was hit by a Kamikaze attack.

Excerpt from USS Randolpg history:
Riding at anchor at Ulithi 11 March, a kamikaze "Frances," a twin-engine bomber, hit Randolph on the starboard side aft just below the flight deck, killing 25 men and wounding 106. Repaired at Ulithi, Randolph joined the Okinawa Task Forc e 7 April. Combat air patrols were flown daily until 14 April, when strikes were sent against Okinawa, Ie Shima, and Kakeroma Island. The following day, an air support mission of fighters, bombers, and torpedo planes hit Okinawa and a fighter sweep struck an airfield in southern Kyushu. Under daily air attack from 17 April on, Randolph continued to send her aircraft on CAP and support missions throughout the month.

My dad was also on the Randolph the evening she was hit. He was attached to Cromlin's Thunderbirds. He's 92 now but would be interested if anybody's got any stories about that time. Me too. Contact me at exfn@ Comcast.net
Thanks
Mark

Over the years since WWII there were a few times that I attempted to describe what I had seen and observed on Ulithi Atoll but never could convey my message.
These pictures brought back memories.
I retired from the Navy in 1967. After my retirement I was always looking forward to visit Ulithi again.
To look out at that anchorage and view all that armada in one place was something that stuck with me all these years.
After the war there was a saying if you were to be stationed in a remote place it was like being at Mog Mog.
The way you relieved your bladder was through a pipe stucked in the sand with a funnel stuck in it.
They would give you a chit for either 2 cokes or 2 beers so there were a lot of swapping going on between beer drinkers and coke drinkers.
The swimming was my favorite past time. The water was clear and warm.
My ship a Liberty was staging for Iwo Jima
