(non-authentic schemes over a more realistic and authentic scheme)


On April 23, 2014, the CAF Aircraft Assignment Committee awarded a T-34B to the Dixie Wing. The aircraft remains in Florida where the required ADs and annual inspection are being performed prior to bringing it home to the Dixie Wing. The Dixie Wing T-34 sponsors are trying to come up with paint scheme that will appeal to public for the rides program and remain historical.

I have found a small bit of info just Googling but was hoping some of you may have some history/historic pictures from back in the days of the US Navy. (http://www.joebaugher.com/navy_serials/ ... ies17.html) shows 140687 (c/n BG-21) to Honduras AF as FAH 1601 in 1977. Sold in 2001 to US user as N687HV. I don't think (Honduras) is correct?

Hi Steve,

The earlier history cards I have for your T-34B are a bit out of focus, so some of the dates are hard to read, but the history is as follows.
Accepted on charge by the US Navy at Witchita, 10 Aug 1955.
22 Aug 1955 began service life with NABTC Pensacola
8 Nov 1955 to NABTC Whiting Field.
Dec 1956 to NABTC Saufley Field, then became VT-1.
24 June 1963, VT-30, Corpus Christi.
30 Mar 64, VT-1, Saufley Field.
22 Oct 1970, into storage at Davis Monthan, Total time 8432 hours.
30 Apr 79, SOC by the Navy.
28 Nov 79 sold to the Dominican Air Force and left for overhaul before delivery. FAD Serial "1601"

Hi Steve: I worked for Parks Industries when your airplane plus 12 others were brought in for overhaul and refurb. It was part of a Military Assistance Program run thru the State Dept for the Dominican Air Force. We completely disassembled the airframes and zero timed most of them. Then we installed bigger engines and 3 bladed props. The instrument panels and avionics were brought up to speed for that time. They left the shop painted all silver with the Dominican AF numbers on the fuselages. DAF sent several mechanics up to learn the systems and the changes we were making. They referred to Earle Parks as "El Hefe" so we had some fun with that. Our pilots delivered them once they were done. Not long afterwards, one of their pilots was putting on an airshow with one of the new airplanes and promptly crashed it by coming out of a loop too low. It was totalled. I lost track of the airplanes after that as we moved on to other projects. Many years later, Parks had engineered the best ways to comply with the AD's on the wing spar and carrythru structure but these became requirements long after we finished them. Too bad you didn't have the opportunity to have these. PM if you run into any questions you can't find locally. BTW, if I had a vote, I would put the airplane in the red and white scheme used later in the Navy program. That's the way they were delivered to the shop for the most part. Yellow just seems too prevalent already. The CAF Invader Squadron also got one of the "donated" T-34's and delivery is expected in October. Regards, JR

This info is Great Guys! Just what I was hoping for. Wix is the Best!! I will pass this on to the Dixie Wing T-34 sponsors and let them run with it, but any of it will need HQ approval.

Also PLEASE remember that the Navy training scheme is INTERNATIONAL ORANGE and White. NOT red and white. I can't tell you how many people must have a red/orange eye deficiency. ;-)

Also your airplane at some point would have carried a white and day-glo scheme. Day-glo roughly covering the areas that the int'l orange did post-1964 or so.
Let me know if you need FS numbers as I can provide those.

I think I have it but correct me if i'm wrong? I'm trying to fill in the blanks on SIDSIKO post and I need some help. I can not find pictures of NABTC Whiting Fields BTG-2,-3 or -6 (letters only tail code) or a T34 in VT-30, all the info I find on ATU-301/VT-30 is Skyraiders or Trojans?

8 Nov 1955 to NABTC Whiting Field.

In 1956 the T-34's began their transfer to Saufley Field. By 1957 all training aircraft at Whiting Field were T-28's. The training squadron designations from 1956 to 1960 were BTG-2 (Basic Training Group), BTG-3, and BTG-6. By the end of 1957 the tail codes for these squadrons were 2G, 2W, and 2P respectively. On February 12, 1959 the Navy officially changed the color scheme of all training aircraft to a basic white and red trim.
In 1960 the naval flight training program saw a major reorganization in naval aviation flight training. On 1 May 1960, BTG-2 (Basic Training Group), BTG-3, and BTG-6 were re-designated VT-2, VT-3, and VT-6 respectively, the tail codes remained 2G, 2W, and 2P respectively. VT-2 and VT-6 were located at North Field; VT-3 at South Field.

Dec 1956 to NABTC Saufley Field, then became VT-1.
