Thanks for posting all these great photos. One that really caught my eye is the F6F-5.
This aircraft has been the subject of a previous thread and it is the first time I have seen that side of the aircraft. Aircraft is F6F-5N, 79669. Thanks again.

I look at the F3H mockup and have two simultaneous thoughts, 1) just how big a flop would that have been if it went into production and 2) it took a lot of courage to take that clean appearing design and make it 'double ugy'.
Anyone else catch the shadows of two A3D's on the Miramar ramp in that tail on shot of the FORDS from the 1966 TV show?
Anudda winnah Mark!! :prayer:

Once again, awesome pictures Mark! Thanks for posting them. Having grown up and having lived next to Miramar for 30 years, it was interesting to see what the base looked like before I started living there in the early 70's. I've spent a lot of time on North Island too.

A background on these units:

You can see the A3D's mentioned in The Inspector's post above in front of the center F5D.

Again, I have to say thank you for posting some fascinating and intriguing pictures.

This incident here is likely the same one related to me by someone I used to work with. He was based at Miramar during that time period. He said an F-8 was on approach to landing, encountered some kind of difficulty and the pilot ejected. The aircraft continued, unmanned, and flew into the hangar. Several men were killed by the fire because there were no exits in the back shop area.
