That pix of Majuro brought back some memories, I've landed C-54 on that strip a couple of times when I worked on Kwaj.

A SBD thread so I can ask a question.
Tales of the South Pacific, James A Michener, The Airstrip at Konora
"An SBD flying medium high cover tangled with a Japanese intruder and shot it down. ..."
The end of the incident being that the SBD, flown by Michener's favourite pilot Bus Adams had to make an emergency landing on the uncompleted strip.

Is this Michener story telling in disregard for facts or was the SBD used in this role with any success?

Watch DOG FIGHTS episode 10, season 1 about Capt. S.W. Vejtasa (ret) and his running fight in an SBD against an A6M to see just how tough that old chicken really was.

Maybe not an SBD-4, but do you still have the photo of the SBD with the "guage" or "inclinometer" out on the wing Mark? It was in the Life Looks At Early Carrier Ops thread or somesuch back in June, but it appears you deleted the photos.

Trivia time, what is that 'pull handle' shaped antenna sticking out of the bottom of the wing in the 'Mark for Mark' photo for?
