On this date in 1945 'Old John, Feather Merchant' a B-25 D (41-30577) modified as a VIP transport aircraft hit the 79th floor of the Empire State Building in foggy weather while trying to make Newark Airfield. One elevator operator rode a car with severed cables over 50 floors to the basement and survived.
One of the engines wound up on a roof across the street and started a fire that destroyed a penthouse apartment.

There is a very interesting book on this incident with plenty of details - The Sky Is Falling by Arthur Weingarten, Grosset and Dunlap 1977.

I have never been able to find an official accident report concerning this accident on my micro film or anywhere else.
Fellow Aircrash Historians Mike Stowe and Craig Fuller also were unable to find any kind of accident report regarding this airplane.
I am sure that one was written up when it happened and likely exists somewhere, but not in the places you would expect to find it.
