Dave,

I got to meet Major Zeamer a number of years ago. The National IPMS was held at Dallas one year and we did a group display of airplanes involved with MOH actions. A friend of mine built the model of this airplane and consulted with Zeamer during the process. Maj. Zeamer said it was just your run-of-the-mill B-17 as far as appearance with some extra armament. I would have to guess that no one has found photos of the airplane or they'd have surfaced by now.

Gosh, you started this thread before I discovered WIX! I hope the bump helps us find something.
Scott

If you bring this up every few months your efforts might be rewarded. For the sounds of it I'd love to see a picture of the a/c in question.

I think I need to track down the story of the bombing raid also.

Tim

I don't think I have a picture of the model, Rogue. I'll try to contact the builder (I've lost track of him over the years) to see if he has photos. I do know that he flew out to present the model to Major Zeamer at his home after the contest and they had a very nice visit.

If I find something I'll be sure to post images.

Hey, I just noticed you're located at Propwash--we hangared our Mooney there in 2002/2003 over in the west line of hangars.

I figured there's always new info and photos coming to light, so I thought it was about time to bring this one back. I'm gonna do that periodically. There must be photos from BUs Spokane, Walla Walla and Hendricks out there somewhere from that time period. Or, I have seen a couple pics from the Albuquerque boneyard - maybe there's more out there ...

Then there's always those photos of a whole line of brand-new B-17s - that would be better than nothing. A shot of her post-combat all battle-scarred would be cooler, though.

Oh well, the quest continues ... :)

Yeah, I remember it.
I am right next to Texas Aerocrafters, with the tree.

Nope - just a late E-model with a bunch of extra guns added. In a letter to me, Jay Zeamer said they had a total of 19 .50 guns aboard.

IIRC, they did an episode of "Dogfights" that featured the mission to Buka. They show in CGI how the plane had the fixed 50 up front that Zeamer could fire.

Martin Caidin wrote about the Buka Mission in his 1967 book "Flying Fortress", but he seems to have embellished the story a bit in increasing the kill total and indicating that 41-2666 never flew again.
