Pensacola with SBD pics

I went to Pensacola last week with my Dad and saw the new SBD, just inside the back fence. We watched the Blues practice their show and visited the museum.

when the Blues land, they pass out flags to the kids to wave the team in. It's a nice touch.

my dad in front of an FH-1 Phantom, a woefully underpowered jet that he briefly worked on while in his last months in the USMC.

and in front of an F7F Tigercat, another make that he worked on.

Cool pics. 3 SBDs there at the same time! Not sure if that is a good idea, the Brass will start thinking they are common wrecks and we know what happens then! :shock:

Well at least they are recovered now so they can be preserved outside in the salt air... :wink:

I remember back in the early 90s they had 5 or 6 out there on the ramp behind the restoration shops with one being the Battle of Midway veteran.That was just mind blowing to say the least.And then there was the vindicator.....

And that same battle of Midway veteran is now beautifully restored inside the museum. The Pensacola guys are top notch.

Nice pics Dave. Interesting how they restored most of the SBD, but for part of the horizontal stab.

I was at NASP yesterday to look over the newest recovery.
I've seen a lot of Lake Birds right after they came of out the
drink and this is is in the best shape of any I remember.
They have cleaned it up some, but the red in the center
of the national insignia is easily visible.

Great to see three of them together and know they are
going to different areas of the country so more people can
see them.

1. One is going in NNAM

2. Two is going to the D-Day Museum

3. Three is going to Hawaii.

Have the arguments over the specific BuNumbers and histories of these 3 birds been sorted out yet?

Well, I know the most recent recovery is 2171. I really didn't
ask about the specific history of it. We'll find out soon enough.
