Can anyone identify this starter ?

I bought it a few years ago and until now I can't find any information on it

JAHCO (Jack and Heintz , Ohio USA) 24 volt inertial direct cranking starter
Model JH3 Assy 280-R3

Looks circa 1940s - 1950s

I have looked everywhere on the internet and parts lists and I can't find anything

Maybe these part numbers will jog the memories of some people here

I'll post some pics tomorrow when I go to the warehouse

I'm no expert but I looked up what little info I have on Pratt and Whitney engines and it seems that P&W did not provide the starter so thier manuals don't show any. They do define the starter mounting flange by diameter. An R1830 engine starter has a 5" diameter flanger or mounting ring. I would bet that your starter will fit most any American radial engine of the 1940s era probably including Wrights as well. That it is 24 volts is important as I think that 24 volt systems were originally military and later migrated to the airlines.

Is there any other number on the data plate particularly one beginning with AN (stands for ArmyNavy)?

Hi John

I should have put a ruler in the photo , the diameter of the ring is about 10" and it weighs about 45 lbs.

I'll get some more accurate measurements later.

Hi Sully

That dates the starter to around 1942 and the correct model is JH3R

Thanks for that
