I have recently been data mining the web, books and magazines for the histories of various surviving B-25s. One important source of information is Joe Baughers serial numbers lists which can be searched using this search engine...

I recently got my hands on a copy of "US Military Aircraft Designations and Serials Since 1909" compiled by John M. Andrade. This book is also an excellant source of information for serial number tie-ups and model designations etc.

The problem is that Joe Baugher's lists and Mr. Anndrade's list sometimes don't match for s/n and c/n tie-ups. Joe mentioned that is lists are from "Lloyd's B-25 book".

So I am asking for your assisting. If you have access to a B-25 could you please take a look at the data plate for me and write down the USAAF s/n and North American's c/n? I am hoping this will point towards which set of lists are correct, but I suspect Joe's lists are correct in this case.

My I suggest you pick up Scot A. Thompsons book it has by far the best list of Data plates.

For the record the NAA # is always on top and will say the city it was build then the NAA # then under it should be the USAAF #.

More than 10 years ago now, I ran into this same dilema while researching the history of the Yankee Air Force's B-25D-35-NC 43-3634. The data plate in the aircraft shows it as "B-25D-30-NA 43-3634 c/n 100-23960. Andrade's book has 43-3634 as c/n 100-23460, a difference of 500. I believe this book has numerous errors in it when it comes to B-25 c/ns.

I created a two page spread sheet that compares the B-25 Construction Numbers by Model/Block Number from three different sources: Norm Avery's book, John Andrade's book and an article on civil B-25s by William Larkins that appeared in the Spring 1978 issue of the American Aviation Historical Society Journal. I will scan this document and email it to you in the next couple of days.

Hi All

Where on the B 25 would I find the aircraft data plate?

The First place to loo if you have access to the cockpit area is right behind the Co-Pilot seat the data plate should be locate just bellow the aft window.

Outside if you can get into the Bomb bay on the forward section of the mid-section about half way up the right side you should see the data plate.

Also you can find construction #s on varoius larger parts of the airframe this can be used to cross-referance to a data plate.
