ISLIP, My home field!! Phenomenal as usual, I've never seen any old shots of ISP. That old side (West side) of the field is where our Alaruses are tied down. I've always loved the classic look of the old round hangars and always wondered the history of them. The Sperry hangar was Garret MX facility for years but is now leased by Excelaire a charter company. When it was time in the 60's for the airport to expand the main (airline) terminal was moved to the south side.

It is amazing in those shots that there is NOTHING surrounding the airport but pine barrens. Now it is densly packed with industrial parks.

I guess I should go ahead and post these, I will be leaving soon for a little trip to the Philippines and Guam. I will return at the end of the next month. I am looking for prewar Navy built tunnels on Bataan... as Dougie said "I Shall Return."

Incredible stuff! Each time you post a new photo montage I think 'well, he'll have a tough time topping this one' but you do!
I also wasn't aware of how innovative and forward looking Leoning really was, most folks I guess just checked him off as a got lucky with one design sort of company. Looking at the 'in work' photos, I see stuff that looks to be as tough as anything designed today and very forward looking and innovative-keep 'em coming!!

Absolutely FANTASTIC! I cannot thank you enough for the several hours of enjoyment I have gotten from looking through these snapshots in time!

Have a great trip to Bataan! On one of my WESTPAC trips in the 70's (it could have been 1977) anyway, I went with a group over to Corregidor and spent time in the Malinta tunnel. There was talk of restoring it as a tourist attraction but that work had not started when I was there. Very fascinating!

Great Stuff ! It's apparent that to Professor Loening, it was all about the float ! Aerodynamics parasitic drag seem to be a secondary consideration !

I have a question, if we break these into groups of 70 or so does it help you all open the photographs? I have so many photos I really don't want to make a bunch of small post but maybe the 134 was a bit much.....please let me know if you are having problems with this, maybe we can figure a way to fix it. Monday I will be leaving for a while

Not surprising when you consider that the three founders of the new Grumman Aircraft Company, Leroy "Roy" Grumman, Leon "Jake" Swirbul and Bill Schwendler were all former Loening mangers or department heads and that Grover Loening was a major stock holder in the new company, second only to Roy Grumman in numbers of shares held.
Loening had fully encouraged the 3 to start a new company after he sold his company to a group of investors.
There were several other former Loening employees who jumped ship for the new company as well.
