Hi everyone last week we visited the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, Somerset, England here is some of what I saw, I will add the modern airplanes a little later. I also have some photographs from the IWM that I will post. From England we went to Molino and the war museums in Moscow, Russia so I will have some snowy photos from there.

I'm convinced that the Brits know how to do a museum better than anyone else! The displays at Yeovilton are fantastic, especially the WW1 dioramas, and they have a wonderful variety of rare aircraft.

From the "Identify these", I can see:

1 - Fairey Gannet
2 - Phantom FG.1
5 - Sea Vixen
8 - Sea Vampire
9 & 10 - Buccaneer
11 MiG-15
14 & 15 look like an early version of the Harrier
17 - SHAR (Sea Harrier)
19 - Lynx
22 & 23 - Wessex

Dunno the Marks/Models an' such... :wink:

Great pics! I assume the museum has some elevated walkways? Always wished they'd install something like that in the NMUSAF.

That "time capsule" Corsair is way cool..I hope the NASM continues it's similar trend of displaying aircraft in "as is" condition (i.e. Flak Bait.)

Is the Walrus an ongoing project, or have the wings just been removed due to space considerations?

Neither.

Look again.

The wings are there, just folded (as they would be on board ship)!

Hi BDK,
Having made a serious study of the aircraft museum Biz, I think that Yeovilton get my five stars for doing the most with the least. They don't have great funding or huge gate revenues (they're in a holiday part of the country, but not the best crowd for an aircraft museum) yet they've managed some of the best displays and they keep adding new ones to them.

The 'Carrier' display was a remarkable step, while 'The Leading Edge' is a good, clean idea, well executed, and the precedent setting Corsair archaeology project deserves wider recognition. Nelson Ezell was very impressed with that on his visit.

Walrus. If your glasses are good enough, with the real thing, you can read the wing-folding instructions on the side, on a brass plaque. :D

I did some duty there years ago just after they built the carrier experience...(I hope thats still there!) Nothing quite like going to the head with harriers landing right outside your window!

'Carrier' is. The active Harriers aren't. :(
