Okay, admittedly I used to play "Warbirds" about thirteen years ago when online WWII combat flight simulations were in their infancy. It quickly became an addiction that I was unable to shake until the parent company crapped out. One of the main creators created "Aces High" which seemed to have taken over the #1 spot for realistic multi-player WWII air combat. "IL-2 Sturmovik" was probably hailed as the most realistic of them all, but it wasn't an open arena like the other two.

Now I see this new massive multiplayer game called "War Thunder". I should probably be out building real time in the RV-4 but once again I'm drawn to the rush of flying into simulated combat with a dozen squad members and vulching a base, or getting into a wild furball with dozens of other players.

Can anyone bring me up to speed on the state of online WWII warbird sims, and where to go to find the best flight models and the best community for big action?

I've been out of the loop since IL-2, but I've kept my ear to the ground and the latest things in flight simming seem to be:

War Thunder. This team acquired some of the assets from the IL-2 team and built a very fun game around them. In full real mode, it is a respectable sim, and it looks amazing. (Like most Russian sims, though, there are times you will suspect the Soviet plane flight models were designed by the the local Commissar). The game is currently being expanded to create an entire ground, sea and air combat experience. I highly recommend it for online play. Best of all, it is free!

IL-2:Battle for Stalingrad. This appears to be IL-2:Cliffs of Dover(a well-intentioned nightmare) with the bugs ironed out. It looks promising, but it is really too soon to tell.

World of Planes is a waste of time. Aces High and Warbirds are still chugging along, but look increasingly outdated.

The website SimHQ.com is a great place to stay current.

Love WarThunder here. You need a serious graphics card to keep it real looking but its a great game / sim.

well looks like something finally decent to try again in ww2 flight sim world

joystick has been gathering dust for a couple of years now so an opportunity to fire up the gaming pc and give it a try

recently the only planes related game finding favour in the household has been storm raiders on the ipad...as close to a decent flight simulator as i am to being an astronaut ( hey, but its free and the 5 year old lad loves it)

thanks for posting
