There have been a lot of movies about the Civil War. These movies are on one aspect or battle of the war. This movie is about the very overlooked contribution by African American soldiers to the war effort. I can't get over the miscasting of Matthew Broderick as an officer in this movie. Granted, young men found their way into leadership postions during the war. Most, if not alll, grew beards to make themselves look older. Matthew is not athletic. Twice, in War Games, we saw Ally Sheedy do more athletic things than what he did. Backin the Civil War, boys quickly became men and could brawl with the best of them. Mattew wouldn't last ten seconds in a brawl. I kept thinking of the teeen wolf character in Teen Wolf. Draws the sword and calls out to Misss Scarlett. Overlook his miscasting and you have a good flick. I give this one two and a half stars out of five.
