We used 'Skoshi Tigers' in VN as did the VNAF the brass hats didn't like them because they didn't make everyone deaf nor tow twin 5 mile ropes of black smoke everywhere they went that told the world 'I'm here now and going over there.....' More a Rapier when the big dogs in charge wanted nothing but Cutlasses if it didn't weigh 37 tons empty it weren't no durned fighter son

I like this film though agree there are off-putting parts to it.

I actually think the story of making the film is more interesting than the story of the plot, there's lots of trivia about that here:

imagine how bad the film would be if George Lucas had directed it!

Loved the opening with the Doors music. Helped turn me into a Doors fan. But the absolute best is the helicopter assault scene on the village. Duval was great as Kilgore. As a former U.S. Border Patrol Agent, I got to fly in OH-6 Little Birds as an observer. I couldn't help but think of that scene in the movie when we were buzzing people and dragging the skids through the bushes. One of the pilots was cool and let me get some stick time in, but only when we were up higher and in forward flight.

I enjoyed to see the recut for the added scenes but I think the first version is better, more compact and noir, a more spiraling and depressing trip into the Heart of Darkness. For instance, the added scene where they stole the surf board is completely superfluous... off course, if there is also a perspective of clipping board of war scenes it's not so out of place. Anyway, for a tighter, more classical epic the first version, the 2nd is more.. pastiche?

The line "And their commanders won't allow them to write f@ck on their airplanes because it's obscene" has always reminded me of a Skyraider friend.

Follow the link and scroll to photo 6. I asked him about this the other day. He says they were at Qui Nhon and a Navy jet diverted in still carrying that 2000 pound bomb. At that point (1965) they hadn't seen any 2000 pounders and were excited to go drop it. He didn't remember whose idea it was for the slogan, but said that he "Placed it square into the top of a red-roofed building".

I give it a 3. It's got good action in it, it shows how insane Nam was ( I just missed it) but the one person I knew who died there was on a Pibber, so it took a few tries for me to get all the way throught it.
