I do not know how you register a vote for this, but I have always considered CROSS OF IRON to be the best war movie ever made, bar none. Small unit action on the eastern front, circa 1944 when things from the German perspective were starting to go downhill. In the climax battle scene they get overrun by T-34 tanks. I remember seeing this back in the, what, 1970s, when all tanks in all movies were painted up Shermans ... these were real T-34s. There was no doubt in watching them that these were not plywood frames on whatever chassis, these were REAL (they actually rented a piece of Yugoslavian Army to make this movie).

Five stars, but only because you do not have a ten star scale.

And it was one of the best adaptations of a book I can remember.
All of the major plot elements got covered.

Thought I would bump this back up to the top again, with the added observation that of the several outstandnig movies currently being polled, this is the only one in which more than half of those who have seen to movie have given 5 stars.

As a former reenactor (German side) with 20 years spent in hobby, I'll say it was an entertaining movie (Sam Peckinpah, what can I say...) historically it rates very low. The uniforms and gear stunk, and the F4U Corsairs dropping bombs takes the cake!!!! On the good side, the Yugo T34s, M53 machine guns (Yugo MG42s), and the factory battle sequence rocked!!! I've seen better war movies but this one was okay for the time in which it was released (1979).

The "sequel" was even worse.... Named "Breakthrough" it had Richard Burton as Steiner and he was tasked to negoiate a ceasefire in Normandy with the "Amis". How stupid. There was only one actor carried over from "Cross of Iron" and he played the character Kruger in both movies.

It's one of my top war films, the uncut version, whilst a bit gruesome, really brings across the savagery of war in typical Peckinpah style.

Wow, the whole movie on youtube. If there ever was a movie that showed what it was like to be losing a war, this is it.

if you can watch the unedited version its an absolute masterclass by peckinpah...the slow motion used brilliantly to add to the carnage all around

one of my favourite war movies plain and simple...and another older one...darn im seeing a trend!
need some decent new movies to rate...
