Warbirds "Out of Uniform"

Tue Feb 08, 2005 5:31 pm

Swiss Mustang's post of F4U BuNo. 92050 in civilian garb prompted me to post pictures of other Warbirds "Out of Uniform". I find the lifes of Warbirds after military service very interesting. I found these pictures on Ron Olsen's website.

http://www.ronsarchive.com/

So let's begin:

Image
A-24B 42-54582 SBD Dauntless
N4488N was photographed when it was operated by Aero Flight Inc. of Troutdale for the City of Portland Mosquito Control. It is currently with the USMC Museum at Quantico, VA. per "Gallant Warriors" 9th ed.

Image
This Wildcat was being operated by the Medford Air Service when photographed. It was converted for range land spraying. As of Feb 2002, N1352N was registered to Bruce D. Roberts of New London, PA.

Image
N58918 is currently with the Tillamook Air Museum.

Image
It would be nice to know the story behind the Mustang in the background and it's 3 bladed prop.

Image
N7625C is listed in WB Dir#1 with Fred J. Arnberg Inc, Yreka, CA 1963. It is not listed in WB Dir#2 and I understand it was lost in a crash.

Image
The crew of tanker 71 are turning onto the active runway, outbound to work on a fire. This B-17 is currently with the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville,OR and is licensed N207EV.

Image
N6651D is currently registered to S.I. Verschoot of Rickey, MT (s/n 151503).

Image
Tanker C13 was operated by Black Hills Aviation at the time of the photo. WB Dir#2 reports it was delivered to the NASM 25Apr84 and still with the NASM in 1992, stored. Check out the Birds in the background.

If you would like to see more. Visit Ron's website. It would be nice to see more Out of Uniform Warbirds so please feel free to post more photos. Thanks.

Great pictures Shay, makes me want to start building model aircraft again!!. I had a look at his web sit and there were some good pictures on that too. The one aircraft I did'nt see was the B-17 powered by Rolls Royce Darts, anybody got a link?.

Nice pix! The A-24B in the first picture is, I believe, at the airforce museum now.... their original SBD went to Midway Airport last year some time. I don't think that Quantico have a replacement Dauntless yet, though doubtless they will have one by the time the new museum is opened. Does anyone know when the new museum is going to be built, or whether they actually have the funds yet?

Cheers,
Richard

You're all welcome, but don't thank me, thank Ron for sharing his unique pictures with the world, on his great little piece of webspace. By the way i got a real kick out of seeing the Wild Cats all dressed up as sprayers. That had to be fun times. Flying a Warbird at 25 feet off the deck for a living.

You could probably ditch one of those FM-2's and have it be a fairly "non-event"!
