Warbird IA/AP Needed Now - Clearing the Record

Mon Feb 15, 2010 8:26 pm

I hadn't planned to address this need on WIX at all, but since others chose to bring it up, here goes. I am in the market for a new IA/AP immediately. It has been positioned in a different thread ("My work in St. louis is finished with no future projects for Eric I made the choice to go back to work for myself.") that perhaps I didn't have any future work or projects to do here. That couldn't be further from the truth. I have 3 warbirds --
(A-1E Skyraider,AT-6D,NA-64 Yale), a Bonanza and a collection of 10 vintage cars to take care of. Not to mention 3 hangars and all the associated support/shop equipment. Several projects that I want to complete remain on the Skyraider and I still plan to add another warbird and additional vehicles to the mix when I have a high enough level of confidence that my operation has enough mait. capacity to take something else on.

The position here is somewhat unique in that I am looking not only for an IA/AP, but someone who can really be responsible to run my operation on a day to day basis. This will require excellent project management, record keeping, and communication skills as well. This is a salaried position that pays 45K to 55K depending on what you bring to the table. I will list some of the basic requirements below. If you meet these requirements or know someone who does PM me.

1. Round engine experience - 1340 ok but premium placed on 3350 1820 2600 2800 etc.
2. Job requires a move to Saint Louis.
3. Must be willing to work on whatever needs to be worked on. Airplanes (both warbirds and GA), vintage cars, motorcycles,
support equipment, etc.
4. Must be able to maintain records and logbooks properly.
5. Pass basic background check, credit check and drug test.
6. References required.

If this you or someone you know, PM me or email me at email4eric@aol.com.

Just remember,You get what you pay for.The salary you offer does not match the experience level you are looking for.JMO

Eric,
What a great idea you had to advertise here on WIX- didn't you find the first guy here? Next time, make sure you have him read a menu without pictures before you hire him. And never, NEVER let a Harley Davidson guy work on an Indian- the little, big and bigger Harley hammers don't work on that beautiful product of Springfield Mass. I wish you and Mike great success in your future endeavors!

You might want to do your homework. I did a very complete salary survey of the other warbird operators/shops (Cavanaugh, Lonestar, Nelson, several others who have asked to remain unnamed etc) and it's competitive. You might be surprised, I wasn't. I have been speaking to people who really know what warbird folks are paid, because they are actually paying them, not those speculating. And I have been doing this for 10 years now.
In the end it all depends on experience as to what I will pay. I have the capacity to pay whatever I choose to, without regard to revenue generated from anything warbird related. Compensation will not be the thing that keeps me from finding the right person. I have no desire to debate it unless I have an applicant with specific, desireable experience in front of me.

Hadn't really planned on posting anything here, but I didn't really like the way things were portrayed in the other thread, so I thought I would clarify. Mike worked for me for 2 years and did what I asked of him during that time. I also wish him the best in his future endeavors.
I doubt that the person will come via WIX, but you never know. I have had a couple people contact me but they aren't the right fit either.

Thanks for the good wishes and BTW, I'm the only one who works on the Chief. :D

I believe that your salary survey results are skewed too. The cost of living in Dallas, Galveston and Breckenridge is a lot lower than the St Louis metro area too. When I was on staff at LSFM, I made roughly 1/2 of what I am now, and was living comfortably then in GLS. I would be tough to have the same quality of life now, at the rate then.

You have your tools mixed up, little hammers are used for working on Ducatis in the diagnosis & fixing of electrical problems. Harley hammers are Big, Bigger & Really Big. ;)

It's a really decent opportunity. The U.S. is in a RECESSION right now. At my local airport we have 120 aircraft of which 35 to 40 are out of annual because the owners have just parked them until things turn around. If Eric puts a listing on CLIMBTO350.COM it will be gone by lunch. THere arent many jobs out there being filled and most work is SW Asia .
Thanks Eric for giveing WIX'rs first dibs, wish I were qualified.

Sounds like a heck of a job to me. IF I had that kind of experience rather than being a museum guy, I'd sure consider applying. Working on some unique aircraft, some neat non-flying stuff, and living in St. Louis (other than putting up with all the Cardinals fans) wouldn't be too bad a deal.
