Recently we find a crash site of a USA aircraft crashed near Laviano, 45 km south\east of Salerno. Do you are able to help us to identify type of aircraft and his pilot? Thanks!

Photo 6 is the gyro wheel for a turn and bank indicator. Air blows over the little cut-outs in the wheel and spin it to high speed.

The wreckage you have is from a Curtiss P-40.

We suppose that this aircraft can be a P-39. We find that a P-39 was last seen 5 miles south of Avellino (Laviano is south of Avellino) in 1944. Someone have information about lt. Harry J. Daniels MIA 23 february 1944 of 332 Fighter Group? Thanks!

What exactly did you set out to do by recovering these parts? I always get a little nervous when I hear about things like this. No offense or anything against you, I apologize if it sounded that way.

I was particularly interested when I saw this was in Italy because the only member of my family that died in the war went down in a B-24 in northern Italy. (I am aware that this site is at the other end of the country.) Maybe sometime soon I'll throw together a thread on the subject.

Thanks. Our purpose is to build the history of aviators that crashed around Salerno area during WWII like you can see in our site www.1943salerno.it

About your family member I suggest to put a request on this site: http://archeologidellaria.tuttovola.org ... board=27.0

Best regards!
