I would suspect the practice is almost as old as aviation itself, especially regarding the military. Here’s the link to my own Aviation History story about the combining of two Sikorsky HRS helicopters in Korea in 1951.

Australian Cessna O-1 Birddog?

"The Australian Army was loaned two Cessna O-1 Birddogs. In 1967 161 Reece Flight operated them. Some 921.35 hours were flown by the two aircraft. They were flown alongside the Cessna 180s on visual reconnaissance flights, night flying missions and Search and Rescue (SAR) among others. In 1970 the remains of a crashed Birddog were recovered to 161 Reece Flights operating base at Nui Dat. Many favours and exchanges took place including the swapping of a HR Holden staff car for parts and components to get the aircraft, now named ‘Bunny II’ to operational configuration. The huge undertaking was a success when it was test flown by Charlie Brewster. The aircraft was then shipped back to Australia and did fly on a few occasions. Retired from flying the aircraft tells an exciting and uniquley Aussie story of ingenuity and perhaps a bit of rule bending."

The nose of Marauder 1501 is on the front of Kermit’s Marauder, if you look at any pics of the crash landed 1464 in the Yukon you will see why.

The F-84F in the War Eagles collection is a composite of at least 5 different airframes. I suspect this is not uncommon with display aircraft.

There was an ex-drone F-100D I saw at Chino back in '08 that was supposed to have been put together out of at least two airframes, 56-2992 and 56-3141:

Thought I had an overall shot but all I got was a piece of ta... I mean the rear of the plane. :roll:

CWH Lancaster FM213 flies with the centre section of 16 combat mission veteran KB895.
This repair was done in the 1950's

Martin-Baker's Gloster Meteors are known as Mk 7.1/2.

They are Mk.7s with Mk.8 tails.

I have a feeling I've read somewhere that that sort of thing is not that uncommon with Meteors, swapping nose and tail sections from different models for a particular purpose.

It's certainly true of the Canberra, the front fuselage and cockpit were often swapped.

Good point. The original nose and cockpit section of one-time world altitude record holder Canberra WK163, currently at Finningley, was fitted to one of a pair of Canberras auctioned in the U.S. last year.

The single SR-71C "The Bastard" Blackbird trainer was made by grafting the rear of YF-12 60-6934 which had crashed during landing and the forward fuselage of a non-flying mockup airframe.

The 89th Sq of the 3rd Attack Group used the fuselage of A-20 " Little Hellion" with the wings of another A-20 to build " The Steak & Eggs Special". Used to haul produce from OZ to Papua. Ran out of fuel in bad weather and was beached on Low Wooded Island, where parts of her still exist.

Our current C-54D 43-17228 is flying with the left horizontal stablilzer from C-54E 44-9144.
