2021 Planes of Fame Air Show - CANCELLED
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2021 Planes of Fame Airshow Cancelled

Chino, California, September 21, 2021 – The Planes of Fame Air Museum has today announced that its 2021 Airshow, scheduled for Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31, 2021, at the Chino Airport has been cancelled. “After losing the 2020 Airshow due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were looking forward to presenting this year’s show,” commented Museum president Steve Hinton. “But the difficult decision was made to cancel this year’s event. We hope 2022 will be a different story.” This decision was made after careful deliberation and discussion. Logistical issues and rising operational costs associated with conducting a large-scale event, as well as the continuing challenges related to the pandemic, have led to this cancellation.

Bummer. Wendover had to cancel earlier in the year as well. Pandemic restrictions are less here in Utah but the financial impact on our major sponsors was just a little to heavy to support the show this year. It just stinks.

There’s no California restrictions for holding the event and I’m about to head out to practice at the Long Beach Grand Prix which typically has at least 100,000 plus during the weekend . The reasons posted on FB were because prices for everything are catastrophic right now. And they are . They would have had to raise the price too high for admission.

Here’s the quote from their FB page :

“ Covid was really an indirect issue rather than a direct issue. Whether it's greed or simply the way business is now, we were hit with astronomical quotes for services like Trams, tents, grandstands, insurance, etc this year. This caught us off guard and would have meant much higher ticket prices and even then, no guarantees of us making any money. And that's the bottom line behind the decision, this is our largest fundraiser and given last year's financial impact, we could not afford to experience a loss this year.”

This is very sad to hear, but I'm not surprised. I would look at other shows having to go the same way with support services getting so expensive, because nowadays you have to pay so much in labor just to get people to show up.

I live nearby and also own a small business. The other issue is most of the support companies probably can't hire enough people. We are down 3 employees and can't get anyone to show up even for a job interview. Phone interviews seem to be OK until the day you want to meet them they don't show up. Very frustrating and it is effecting our operations so I think Chino and supporting business are all in the same boat.

Maybe they should have went with the TOM model and did a drive-in show, but that may be difficult to spontaneously plan and execute.

A very wise business decision...

That would not work with the layout and parking arrangements at Chino

Kinda see what you mean with a look at google maps, not exactly surrounded by open fields like Ypsi

It used to be surrounded by open fields. Like every airport in Southern California the urban creep is trying to push out the airports. Which came first? The chicken or the egg? Absolutely love to hear residents who move in to complain about the airport or worse like in El Monte, the local government tried to force out the County controlled airport to make -another shopping mall. That battle is still going on. County is acting mighty strange lately on how they handle the airport control and they fired their local contractors that were running all five here in LA County to try and run them themselves as recently as two months ago. Anyone who flies around Los Angeles should have their guard up about what is going on.

Yep, easy to read the urban encroachment in densely populated areas like that - And of course, 1 crash into a house would produce shrill cries to eliminate it. Am guessing they keep what open fields are left to give pilots possible options other than crash into buildings.
Interesting google maps peep, almost feel like a voyeur ! Many aircraft appear in very rough shape and looks like a huge salvage yard on the premises - The 2 105's caught my eye. Do they have alot of hanger space as well to keep some prime birds out of the weather ?

Indeed.
I couldn't understand why anyone thought once the pandemic was 'over,' it would immediately mean a re-set to 2019. There was a ripple effect that we're feeling right now (just look up the logistical apocalypse that is going on right now) and we're really nowhere near being 'done' with the pandemic even though countless people are wallowing in comical levels of denial in that regard.
I genuinely feel we're on the downhill side of this situation but it's being made worse than it has to be by almost criminal levels of willful ignorance. It doesn't help that we currently seem to have a world where nobody wants to work to do the service jobs needed to make anything like this happen.
Of course that means that the issues noted for this airshow are going to be with us for a while afterward.
I wish PoF (and the rest of us) bluer skies for 2022!
