Chris, there’s a wide collection of destroyed aircraft, ships, buildings, runways and sadly many are quite graphic. This is what I’m being told. I’ve seen two photos, one of a close up of a destroyed B-17 and an incredible view of a panorama of battleship row. Both as clean and clear as the Kodachrome photos I’ve posted in the past.

Very interested in seeing more. I hope to be able to post some here.

The panoramas must be very interesting, it has been 80 years, but guess I can wait a few more months. Yes really hope you can share as many as possible.

Interesting how the raid still holds so much interest. I remember sitting on a bollard on base on a quiet morning 20 years ago all by myself right across from battleship row and picturing in my mind the movements during the attack. Very moving, the place drips with history, tragedy and emotion. The channel is not as wide as you would imagine, the Kate's had a narrow drop window.

If you ever have the chance to go to the National Archives Annex in College Park, Md, take advantage and go. It has an awesome collection of the Signal Corps photos of the Pearl Harbor attack. I went there monthly when I was an editor for World War Two magazine. So many images that have never been published.

Just been found and never before seen so I have to hold off on posting until December. Those of you who are aviation historians will need to be sitting with oxygen nearby.

In the meantime if the month didn’t give you a clue this video should help.

I don't think anything has been sold. I think it's about who will pay the most to see the collections. As in perhaps developing a documentary or something on those lines. I'm guessing because I don't know. I guess I can't blame the folks who have control of the collections, yet I wouldn't be looking at it along those lines. I would think it should be an obligation and duty to share unique and rare history with the masses, but that's me.

We'll just have to see what happens. I'm convinced someday those of us interested will be able to view the collections. Hopefully.

M

Me thinks there are still pics and vids in the LOC, NARA and other collection points that haven't been found or seen. The folks at the museum in Hawaii may have some more insight on the collection question???

So since things are in limbo for the forseeable future, can you tell us about the destroyed B-17? Was it one of the NMF D-models from the 5th or 11th BG? Perhaps this one?

No Chris, the B-17 photo I saw was a color shot of one of the OD arriving from the States.

I reached out to the folks in possession to the collections. No luck for WIX sadly. Internet forums and chat sites, no matter the quality of members, are not in their interest.

I tried :(

FWIW....this was in Military.com. Some of these pics I've seen before. Note the B-17 pic and what maybe the photographer's camera box and hat in the foreground.

Unfortunate - but not surprising. On the other side of the coin, there are photographs in Wendover while the 509th CG and 216th Base Unit (Special) was here that are part of the Los Alamos National Library collections. However for whatever reason, they are still classified and not available for publication.

Hi Mark -

Just like to clarify a couple of things, if that's okay with you.

You mentioned that the B-17 photo you'd seen was "a close up of a destroyed B-17", and later that it was one of the 7 December arrivals. On that basis I assume that it is 40-2074, the Swenson plane?

Also, you mention "collections" - plural - so is it possible to outline, even broadly, the extent of this material? The reason I ask is that I know there were photographs taken of the Hickam B-17s being repainted in the so-called "Hawaiian Air Depot" scheme, but they are now nowhere to be found. Dana Bell speculated that they might be in the Hawaiian Department collection at NARA, but all my efforts to follow up on that have led nowhere.

Anyway, as others have said, thanks for trying!
