My background is SP Artillery, so maybe a a tanker can answer this question. Why would you need a travel lock on a barrel that short?

To protect the elevating mechanism / gearing in the turret while the tank is bouncing around as it moves from place to place on roads and cross country. That would be when enemy contact is not expected, like in the rear areas.

Same reason as long tube Artillery. I figured with the length of the barrel there wouldn't be much travel at all. We moved a howitzer about 10 feet on a hard packed parking area and the tube wasn't in travel lock. An Ordinance CW4 happened to be walking by and delivered about as good a wire brushing to my rear end as I'd ever received. Suffice to say it never happened again. :drink3:
