Can't believe that some guy in the Facebook post on the Lancaster suggested that painting bomb mission symbols & a swastika kill flag on that Lanc was STOLEN VALOR because that particular plane never saw combat. Guess no WWII plane/vehicle should ever be flown/driven because the pilot/driver would be guilty of Stolen Valor & should be hung by the .... or sent to prison.

There are some odd opinions out there.
By the same (lack of) logic, there should be no reenactors...lest someone think the 19 year old was actually part of the 8th AF or the 82nd Airborne in WWII or the Army of the Potomac.

Remember the vets, the wonderful planes they flew and their sacrifices for a future many of them did not live to see.

Stolen Valor (to me) is when someone dresses up in a modern military uniform and attempts to pass him or herself off as an actual current service member and receive the accolades, honor, respect etc an actual military personnel could receive. These individuals actually lie about themselves in order to feel some sort of misplaced attention. I cant understand how anyone reenacting from any era would be mistaken otherwise. Especially since all the reenactors I've seen (myself included) have always made sure to distinguish themselves as such, and not have someone think they are an actual current enlisted servicemen.

As far as painting an aircraft into a scheme that was worn by a different plane, I cant even begin to understand why that would be a problem. Of course people are going to want to paint their TBMs as George Bush's aircraft, or why Tallichet kept his B-17 in Memphis Belle markings. Or why so many P-51s have schemes of aces or other aircraft that were in the thick of it.

The squadron codes, which are different on either side. represent the two Lancaster squadrons based at East Kirkby during WW2 (57 and 630). I'd say that's justified! Hope she does fly again

That particular Lancaster is a monument to the owners, whose brother was killed during WW2 aboard a Lancaster. So how much more appropriate, poignant, respectful and decent can you get?

Facebook can be a good place to learn things but it can also be a mouthpiece for those whose opinions are not worth sharing.

Christopher Panton was actually killed when a Halifax was shot down during a raid on Nuremberg.
When his younger brothers were in a position to buy a WWII aircraft as a memorial, there weren't any Halifaxes left - hence the Lancaster.

And now the centre has a fully fitted out Halifax cockpit section on display, the one I build

I'll look forward to seeing it next time we go.
We used to go to the night taxi runs most years but I've just realised we haven't been at all, at any time of day, for eight years or so.
Something to be rectified when we're allowed out again.
