Bearcats?

Hudner and Brown flew Bearcats at Quonset Point prior to transitioning to the Corsair. The book "Devotion" by Adam Makos contains some details about that period of time and I assume the movie will cover it as well. The book is well worth reading for anyone with an interest in the story.

They appear to be getting some very cool footage, so hopefully less CGI.

But from reading that "article" it sounds more like its going to be "Red Tails with Corsairs".




- what a terribly sloppy written article, don't they have Editors that proofread that stuff before posting.

Let's just hope it won't be the standard cheesy low-budget "cliched writing with extreme close ups in every shot, of people who never seem dirty" war movie that everyone has made in the last few years.
The real story deserves way better than that.

I wonder where in WA they'll be filming this, and if Brian Reynold's FG-1D at Olympia will be used?

The filming is occurring in Wenatchee.

Looks like on the Corsair marked 211 that there is a camera mounted on the tail pointing underneath the plane. Should be an interesting camera angle.

Just an FYI, that Corsair was sold in 2019 to Charles Somers and has since been based in Sacramento, California.

It was interesting finding out today via Facebook that the F4U-4 painted in Thomas Hudner's markings is not Trent Latshaw's Corsair, but is rather Dan Friedkin's F4U-4 in movie paint. Obviously the F4U-7 is from the Erickson Aircraft Collection.

They are also using the Planes of Fame F4U-1 painted up in F4U-4 markings, fitted with the later canopy again as well as what appear to be borrowed outer wings (note rocket stubs). Photo by Don Seabrook:

So the world is blighted by C19 and many filming projects are on hold or abandoned. Folks apparently just don't go to the movies anymore, and anyway nice cheap CGI scenes are all the rage.

Here we have a production going ahead, using real aircraft that are marked perfectly accurately, with pilots wearing all the period gear, with the scenery to boot. If they are going to this kind of effort and paying this much attention to detail it seems really promising and sounds like it deserves to be an enormous success.

The real life story is a remarkable one and deserves the best.

I had no idea, but Olympic Flight Museum has been shuttered since the pandemic started for the most part, so they could have done all kinds of things with Brian's collection and I wouldn't have known.
Kinda sad, as Brian sold a few planes for pay for the restoration and waited years for it to be complete. I think it maybe flew for 2-3 years there if that, as it exists today.

The director is not one of the usual suspects, so this could be much better than recent aviation war movie efforts. Aviation is also in his family. I remain cautiously optimistic.
