P-51B-15-NA "The Iowa Beaut" ...

North American P-51B-15-NA Mustang (355th FG, 354th FS, "Iowa Beaut") shot down by flak near Rechtenbach Sep 11, 1944. MACR 8676. Sadly Pilot KIA.
Below some photos of 'The Iowa Beaut,' of the 354th Fighter Squadron flown over the English countryside by Lt Robert E Hulderman, mid-1944. A different pilot in this plane was lost near Rechtenbach, Germany, Sep 11, 1944.

I'm pretty sure a book I have about the air war over Europe has one of the B-17 escort pictures on the cover. Nice pics!

Just to give credit where it's due, that sideview of The Iowa Beaut was painted by the late John Preston and appeared in a sort of "friend and foe" thing in Log of the Liberators.

John also did a lot of excellent work for Kenn Rust's series of unit histories for Aero Publishers.
