There seems to be some C-45, AT-11 fans and experts here...

Years ago I read a brief account of the program to rebuild wartime Beech 18s into D18S standards.

Given the description of the mods (just about new everything and in the case of AT-11s, new fuselage?), I've always wondered how much of the aircraft was new? Or perhaps The real question is how much was retained?
The aircraft received new Msn and military serials.

Also, I believe the work was done away from Wichita.

Anyone have an idea about the cost per unit and if it was really any less expensive than buying new aircraft (or whether it was easier to get money to rebuild existing aircraft than get congressional approval for new ships?...rather like the DH-4 rebuild programs of the 20s).
