The only Confederate/Commemorative Air Force warbird I can think of was the P-38. Any of you'z rebel's know of any other aircraft that stayed, or was painted to stay' in civilian schemes? Reason for asking is I found an interesting photo of a CAF plane in a civil scheme. I'll post it later.

Mark,

To be clear, your not referring to the fleets original Red, White and Blue scheme are you?

No I'm not referring to that era because, as I understand it, all of those warbirds that had the original CAF scheme were either lost, sold, taken away in some form or painted with military schemes. I'm wondering if any CAF aircraft stayed in a civil scheme other than L Gardner's P-38.

Mark, not sure what other aircraft you are thinking of but in the 1975 History of the Ghost Squadron the following were in "civilian" paint in the photos - A-20, B-23, B-26 and an L-5. This was before my time in the CAF.

Greetings Randy, I guess I'm not explaining the question properly. Other than the P-38 that stayed in a 'civil' scheme for years, are there/were there any other CAF aircraft that stayed in a civil scheme? Seems that all the CAF's main base aircraft inventory and chapter/sponsor aircaft eventually went with a Military type scheme.

Here's the reason for the inquiry. This CAF SNJ-5 scheme is interesting and attractive as well. Wondered if any other CAF aircraft retained their civil scheme as opposed to going with a later military scheme.

Mark - It was not uncommon for CAF members to put Confederate Air Force stickers and other markings on their planes in the earlier days. My own SNJ-6 had CAF decals on it in the 1980s. I think this may have been a privately owned plane but again, it is before my time began with the CAF. This plane seems to have crashed while doing aerobatics in Florida on February 8, 1975. Below is the link to the NTSB report, which does not name the owner. Perhaps someone knows the rest of the story. Randy

Didn't they have a red/white/blue Mustang?

For years I've wanted to see the CAF A-20 in its original civil scheme, can anyone post any pics, or if you've seen it just describe it?

Guess my original question is still confusing a few folks. So how about I ask these questions:

1. Does, or when did, the CAF require all their fleet of aircraft to switch to military type schemes?
2. If not the first question. Are there any CAF aircraft that wear civilian schemes today only?
3. Are the 'Wings', where ever they are based, allowed to choose either a military or civil scheme on their aircraft?
4. Who among the CAF decides scheme decisions?

just wondering.

In this thread from 2009 there are some interesting pictures of the A-20:

To see the pictures you are looking for you have to scroll almost all the way down on page one.
