The P-38 at Joint Base McGuire

Fri Oct 12, 2018 8:58 am

Anyone know where this P-38 ended up after being taken down off its pedestal over 3 years ago? Is it on indoor display somewhere on the base now??

I think it's already been cleaned up and placed back on it's stick.

Thanks for the info. For some reason I thought they were going to put it on display inside somewhere on the base.

That's the one at Elmendorf, not McQuire. It is still a cool link, thanks.

Here are photos from 2016 when they put it back on the pedestal after it had been removed the year prior (as can be seen, they fully painted the aircraft before putting it back on display): https://www.flickr.com/photos/jointbase ... 6284984673

More so now than ever before, a full-scale carbon fiber replica would appear no differently to how this one appears now, making it that much more a shame that it is the real deal, left to remain outside indefinitely.

It's hard to believe, given their rarity, the AF would do such a thing.

It goes back to the late 1970's when David Tallichet made a deal with the USAF. P-38's were cheaper then.
It's still a shame that it isn't at least indoors.

I should have said, I can't believe they CONTINUE to display it in such a way. One would hope they could figure a way to cover it overhead possibly surrounded with transparent panels protecting it directly from the elements....of course in a visually appealing presentation free of charge due to the patriotic generous philanthropy of a Frank Lloyd Pei Niemeyer. If wishes were fishes Pee Wee...

Nice project for Gate Guardians.

Nice links in this thread. Would someone please correct the spelling in the thread title to "McGuire", otherwise future keyword searches will not bring this one up for those interested in this P-38.

Is the P-38 located in an area of the base that is open to the public?

By the way, that P-38 not only once had a civil registration and N-number, but was also flown to Mcguire. They put a flyable P-38 on a stick!

"Flyable", yes, but remember it was 1981, when the standard of "flyable" had an entirely different meaning, also birds on sticks had an entirely different meaning as well.
