A nice story of the recycling of a MLD C-47A that had a forced landing.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-24/h ... d/10221054

Douglas C-47A-25-DK serial no 13210, registration W-12 of the Marine Luchtvaart Dienst (Netherlands Naval Aviation Service)

During a flight from Sydney to Jakarta, this C-47 was struck by lightning en route over Katherine Gorge in Northern Territory. The electric systems failed and radio and navigation equipment were no longer available. The pilot decided to carry out an emergency landing near Gimbat Station.
W-12 was towed to the town of Katherine, and then on towards Darwin through a river bed and jungle. It was finally transferred by ship from Darwin to Sydney to be used by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines as an engine test bed.
The linked article focuses on its subsequent life as a campervan.

Pretty cool story.
I'm amazed at how good it looks with those front fenders. They really suit each other.
When I first saw the title of the thread I was going to make a wise crack like "I expected to see a bunch of soda pop cans".
This was a pleasant surprise.

I'm glad it's still around, I remember a library book I got out several times as a kid that featured a photo of it. Would be neat to see in person!

American, though they may not have been the only one.
