New Ki-61 Tony in Japan????

Well new to me at least.

Museum link: http://www.sorahaku.net/display/1000589.html

And some very nice pictures from a Japanese Facebook page. I wonder where this airframe came from. I really like tha basic yet very clean restoration type.

This is the Ki-61-IIKai that had been most-recently displayed at the Chiran Peace Museum.

quoting from Wikipedia:

"Ki-61-II-Kai on static display at the Kakamigahara Aerospace Science Museum in Kakamigahara, Gifu. Previously on display at the Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots in Chiran, Kagoshima; it was removed from the museum in September 2015 and restored by Kawasaki Heavy Industries from 2015 to 2016."

Ahhhh...thank you!

I was under the impression it was a new one.

Looks better in natural unpolished metal does it?

Neat.

Really excited that we should see some restorations of the Ki-61 come out in the years ahead.

Will Yagen's be the first to come out of AvSpec in New Zealand?

I have to hand it to the JAA...

Returning the Hien to Gifu where she was born...

Returning her to natural metal to uncover manufacturing details...

And coming up with the "now-you-see-it-now-you-don't" hinomaru projection is pretty cool.

Beautiful. Now, is my mind playing with me or is that a two bladed propeller on the Zero suspended near the Tony?

You got it.

I believe the museum's focus is more on aeronautical design rather than military service, so they went for the look of the prototype.
