A few years ago Spitfire Tr.9 MH367 made a precautionary landing at Drury Glider Airfield, New Zealand. Unfortunately the prop made contact with the somewhat undulating surface (which isn't an issue for the tow planes and gliders). After repair, it was planned to fly it out to the very close Ardmore Airport, but in the meantime the surface had become too wet to support it, so it was trucked out. Drury is 950m (3,100ft).

Takeoff isn't a problem. It's landing. The aircraft is nose-heavy, so you can't use the brakes hard on landing. And they tend to fade when used firmly.

Also width -- a 100 ft wide runway is fine, but any narrower and you don't see much on either side. At 75 ft, if you do see runway out one side, it means you're drifting the other way.

I remember when the Spit eas offered a LONG time ago as <<free<< even here on WIX (or its previous incarnation) to any good home that would take care of it.

I cannot find who was offering it back then however!
