Ladies and Gentlemen or should I say, "Pilot trainees"!

I am proud to announce that Historic Wendover Airfield, The Arizona Ground Crew and the Utah CAF Will be hosting a World War II pilot training camp this coming September!

WIX is getting the exclusive announcement prior to our making the camp public on Friday. This will be a 4 day camp similar to "Bomber Camp" but held in Wendover, Utah. Air Cadets will be sleeping in the WWII Barracks and messing (eating) in the WWII Mess Hall. Ground School will be conducted in the massive 'Enola Gay' hangar. Visit the WWII Service Club on base while not training for a little relaxation or just sit on your bunk in the barracks and write a letter home on your footlocker. But don't count on too much down time as there will be flight time each day for all students - two flights in a Stearman and two flights in a T-6 'Texan'.

You will be immersed into the lifestyle and culture of the USAAF while serving during this Training Camp. You will learn what it was like to be an Air Cadet during WWII.

You can register here: http://www.planetreg.com/WWIIPilotTrainingCamp And check out the facebook page at : https://www.facebook.com/FIGHTERCAMP/

Then, Historic Wendover Airfield is hosting our annual air show on Saturday September 9th featuring the US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet Demo as well as a number of other aerobatic performers and warbird displays!

If you have questions post them here and either Scott or I will get right back to you!

To make it really authentic, they need to stay in an open bay barracks with the latrine at one end of the building.
And based on time spent in one at an Army fort in a war-era barracks (during an exercise, the unrestored building served nicely to simulate a derelict building) in the 90s, the latrines had rudimentary plumbing and no toilet stalls.
For maximum authenticity, my dad told me that they were limited to three squares of TP at a time.

See, war was hell. :)

Actually JohnB your wish is our command! Cadets WILL be staying in a restored WWII barrack with cots and your own spacious wardrobe - a small hanging shelf on the wall nest to your cot! Latrine facilities will be a little more accommodating. Either Scott or I will get some photos posted of the barracks soon!

That is exactly the one the Cadets will be staying in to! Although for the camp we won't have class 'A' uniforms for everyone :D

So are trainee pilots required to hold current FAA medicals and or have their private pilots ticket? Obviously no one is soloing but I was just wondering what the requirements were.

Perhaps 'logable' time might be a better term. No prior experience is required, however, if you have your medical, private, or any other ticket the flight time under the care and tutelage of a CFI >can< be logged as instruction and count towards total time.

To back up Shrike, Yes the pilot instructors will be Certified Flight Instructors and the time will be loggable "Pilot In Command" PIC time.
You WIL NOT however get to : earn a pilot licence, earn a Tail wheel certification, be in control during Landing or Take off.

Really this is an opportunity to step back in time and get a close feeling for how cadets would have experienced flight training during WWII (at a quick pace). The base, buildings, barracks, hangar, vehicles, and ramp are the exact same place that thousands of bomber crews used between 1941 and 1945. The Arizona Ground crew guys will really make it a memorable experience for you and really, there is no other place in the USA that you will get the same feeling of 'place'.

If you have any questions regarding the flight time portion, send me a PM and I can put you in contact with the pilot(s).

Thanks,

Tom P.
