Someone one I know is researching their grandfather's service history. Most of the grandfather's records were lost in the big fire at the archives. Here is a pic of his unit patch. He was stationed in the Aleutians during the war and is believed to have been flying out of there against the Japanese forces. Here is a pic of his unit patch. It looks like a winged walrus. Does anyone recognize this patch? Thanks in advance.

41st FIS.

Edit: 41st Pursuit/Fighter. According to the dubious Wiki, the unit flew missions out of Washington state, 1942/43, then to Pacific.

Where did you find the winged walrus? The 41st was the "Flying Buzzsaws. Thanks.

I recognize the patch: it was later an F-86 unit.

Hope you can find out more. Unit was P-39/P-400/P-38/P-51 etc during WW2.

Ok, thanks. Wiki and Google shows a winged buzzsaw for the 41st. (if it's correct?) I was also looking for a possible nose art connection. Nothing yet.

No knowledge just an idea: almost every book illustrating squadron insignias has both official and unofficial squadron logos. Could this be an unofficial one? You have to admit that it would be pretty easy mod to take out the walrus and insert a saw blade.

Could be. Here is the full size pic to help put the patch in perspective. Could it be something other than a winged walrus?
