Back in the 1970's, there was a company called W.A.R. and they were selling blueprints to build up 1/2 scale homebuilts that looked like their WW II counterpart. The first design was the Focke Wulf FW-190A. The next year they had a mock up in their booth of a 1/2 scale Corsair with one folded wing. THey also had planes for the P-47 and Stuka. I was furious as it wasn't blue like the Corsairs on the show "Baa Baa Black Sheep" or on the flightline at Oshkosh. I thought they were trying to copy the paint scheme of the Vietnam War era aircraft.
One of my dad's friends, a WW II vet was familiar with the AU-1. According to him there was no way Congress was going to approve the building of any more F4U Corsairs. There was an endless supply of them in the boneyard. The Marines wanted more of the same. No doubt their examples were shot up from service in the ground attack role in Korea. So to sneak it through Congress they presented it as an all new design at a very affordable price.
Any parts interchangeability is merely a coincidence. 8)

If you're talking about between the AU-1 and the -1s "in the boneyard," that statement is probably more true than joke.

Different engine and forward fuselage. Different outer wings. Different cockpit. Different glass. Maybe some of the landing gear and tail surfaces would interchange (maybe not), but that's about it, I think.

It lookslike a model airplane as no one has ever done this scheme on a Corsair. Would love to see it in formation with an A-4C, a Skyraider, and C-1 or T-28. Hope it makes it to Oshkosh.

That's the first thing I thought as well. Strange indeed. Still a beauty though

It was a real scheme. "The Corsair lasted long enough in service, as the AU-1 attack version, to be repainted light gull gray (36440) and white in accordance with the change introduced on 23 February 1955. This one was assigned to Aircraft Engineer Squadron-12 at Quantico, Virginia, circa 1957, to provide training for air-to-ground controllers."
