Does anyone in Wix-land know if the Mosquito was ever re-engined with RR Griffons, or had its armament upgraded by replacing the .303 Browning MG's with 50 calibres? (Obviously retaining the 20mm Hispano's).

Or was the RR Merlin/.303 Browning status quo considered to be sufficiently effective to see out the war.

Just curious.

I don't think any Mosquito's were ever built or re-engined with Griffon's though I remember reading that De Havilland were looking into a Napier Sabre engined variant though DH were told that the Sabre engines would unlikely be available so the idea was dropped.

It would be interesting to know what the American operated Mosquitos had for guns.

I think the USAAF only flew them in the Photo Reconnaissance role so they were unarmed.

Now that would have looked like one bad-ass flying machine. The sound would have been awesome - two Sabres flying in close formation!
